Gaviota: The End of Southern California explores one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots in the world. Filmed over five years, this film leads audiences from the ocean floor of the Santa Barbara Channel to the peaks of the jagged Santa Ynez Mountains.

In a monumental collaboration of artists, activists, and environmental organizations, this film documents the wildlife that thrives in Santa Barbara like no other place in Southern California. This wild journey crosses paths with breaching humpback whales, red-tailed hawks and elusive mountain lions. Over fifty unique wildlife species that are found on the Gaviota Coast are documented here. With nearly 90% of Southern California’s coast lost to development, the preservation of this coastline is the last bastion of hope for wildlife fighting to survive against a world closing in on them.

From Director Shaw Leonard

"In 2007, the Naples Coalition asked me to help their cause by making The Future of the Gaviota Coast, a film that focused on the Naples property. I jumped at the opportunity, and began exploring the Coast with a camera. In 2009, I had the honor of screening The Future of the Gaviota Coast at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The community’s support was overwhelming, and I began dreaming of making a film that was focused on the wildlife of the Coast."

"I wanted to tell a story that would inspire people both locally and beyond to get involved in protecting this natural treasure. I started working with the Gaviota Coast Conservancy, including Guner Tautrim, a 6th generation Gaviota Coast resident who serves on their Board of Directors. The Gaviota Coast Conservancy is the only organization focused exclusively on defending and preserving the entirety of the Gaviota Coast. Their mission was aligned with the story I wanted to tell, and the dream of Gaviota: The End of Southern California was born. Gaviota Coast Conservancy agreed to be our fiscal sponsor. Throughout the duration of the filming process, dozens of volunteers and board members from the Gaviota Coast Conservancy have helped in every stage of the production. I can’t wait to reconnect with them and show them the film they helped create."

Gaviota Coast Conservancy is delighted to support this lovely film. For more information:
