Point Conception is the "Cape of California" where the coast turns from east/west to north/south and the marine and terrestrial ecosystems dramatically change. This is one of the reasons the Gaviota Coast is so biologically significant. It includes the northernmost boundary of some southern species and the southernmost boundary of some northern species.
