ease steelhead passage 01/05/06
Crews are nearly finished installing a two-lane bridge over El Capitan Creek to replace a nearby cement crossing that blocks the pathway for steelhead to and from the ocean.
Located on Calle Real just off the El Capitan Beach exit from Highway 101, the $400,000 bridge is financed largely by a grant applied for jointly by the Department of Fish and Game, Santa Barbara County Land Trust and the nearby El Capitan Canyon resort .
The bridge should be finished in "the next couple of weeks," said Larry Callahan, co-owner of the resort.
"It's an effort to introduce the steelhead into the coast," he said. "It's a real positive thing."
